Instant gratification. Microwaves, binge watching a series (who didn’t watch more than one episode of “The Chosen” at a time?!), Learning a trade vs Youtubing a video on how to drill a hole, and then calling yourself a carpenter…
We are doing ourselves a disservice… we took the benefits of speedy results and we are using them against ourselves! We don’t even write a message anymore, we just send an 😢
So this was part of my train of thought as I am, once again, sitting and staring into the distance, and trying to come up with another good idea to try and save the income and livelihoods of all my colleagues.
Where is a mr Miyagi when you need him?! “Patience grasshopper… good things come to those who wait…” or maybe Yoda is a better teacher? “Do… or do not. There is no ‘try’” – of course, the quintessential Sean Connery may be the way to go “Try? Try? Losers ‘try’… winners takes the prom queen home!”
Well… all of those are fictional characters, so I turned myself to google and looked up: “how to learn Patience, quickly”
108 million results in 0.49 seconds….
According to the shortest list, I should:
1. Make Myself Wait. The best way to practice patience is to make yourself wait. …
2. Stop Doing Things That Aren’t Important. …
3. Be Mindful of the Things Making You Impatient. …
4. Relax and Take Deep Breaths.
(These are all based on science… although … I am pretty sure I have read these in fortune cookies at one time or another!)
So fast forward a day or three and I am driving to work while listening to a sermon from some pastor or another, and in a complete side comment, He mentions 1 Corinthians 13, and my mind unhinged! (Can’t remember what the sermon was about)
Love is patient
(1 Corinthians 13:4)
LOVE is patient… being patient isn’t love, but being, acting and choosing love, results in patience.
Trials and Tribulations = patience
…but also
Love = patience
Mind blown!
I don’t have to suffer through trials and tribulations to possible learn patience over time… all I have to do is love and patience is an added, free gift to you.
Want to motivate your team? Do not speak in despair, not in anger, not in frustration. No veiled or direct threats. Speak in Love. The Aramaic word for love is “Hooba” which means to ‘set fire to’ – So when Paul writes about speaking in love and speaking with love, he is literally saying that he is speaking from a place of burning love that is setting their hearts on fire!
WOW!!!
I am literally running every frustrated conversation of the last week through my head and thinking how much better I could have handled it if I spoke in Love instead of anger, fear and good intentions.
“How can you mess up this one chance?! We all depended on you!”
“I see you are struggling right now. Can I help you with this?”
…and as Paul says… without actual, all covering love, the gift of the gab, the wisdom of solomon and all my generosity just means diddley squat. Cow dung has more value… at least it will fertilize the soil! And you know why it works? Because Love never stops Loving!
“So above all else, let love be the beautiful prize for which you run.”
1 Corinthians 13:13
