I know vitamins are good for me… I am not sure why…
My friends in the medical profession all say I should get more in me, but Google it. It seems quite controversial.
Harvard Health says “…Most studies find no benefit from multivitamins in protecting the brain or heart…” while Penn Medicine says “…Vitamins and minerals are essential to helping your body develop and function as it should…” especially as you get older.
The main conclusion seems to be: Take them. The risk is low, Potential benefits are high, it makes sense to rather do than don’t… So I will go with the group that says:
“…Vitamins and minerals boost the immune system, support normal growth and development, and help cells and organs do their jobs…”
Last week I was reading comments on Facebook about a biblical commentary writer. and one of the comments that really stuck with me is a person that wrote something to the line of: His commentaries are great, I regularly use them… it is just a shame he was a baptist…
I couldn’t get my head around it.
Paul writes:
“But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice. Yes, and I will continue to rejoice,”
(Philippians 1:18 NIV)
Jesus Himself told the disciples to shush when they complained that others were using the name of Jesus to drive out demons.
In the Gospel of Mark, Jesus says:
“Don’t stop him!” Jesus replied. “For the one who does miracles in the power of my name proves he is not my enemy. And whoever is not against us is for us.”(Mark 9:39-40 TPT)
Which is where I got stuck on the vitamins. We might be going to church every week, and we might know how to pray, and we might know the songs and send our kids to Sunday school because we “know” it is good for us and them.
And it is true… it is good to have a dose of good news and morality injected into our lives.
But are we drinking the Church Vitamins ”just in case”?
The guy using the name of Jesus recognised that there is power in His name. He understood that there is something there worth having, but unlike the disciples who were friends with Jesus, He experienced God’s power from afar. He did not have the relationship the disciples had.
The disciples, however, didn’t call on the name of Jesus… they called Jesus.
…and that is the big difference. Understanding that the ways of Jesus are good for you in all things, will make you a better person, however…
Knowing Jesus… it’s just a completely different level!
It’s the difference between reading the book or knowing the author and having them tell you the story in their own words. It’s just not the same thing. It’s going hunting vs watching the show on TV
How can we, with words or without, live a life that challenges people to find Jesus, not just learn about Jesus…?
