Overview
The School was a bit of a reality check for most of the musicians there…
To be fair, most of them are very capable, and part of rather bigger teams with great setups, but there were a few of us “loners” – just me and my triangle, trying to make a difference!
The goal was to get to Excellence. To get to a point where technology works, and theory makes sense… and above all… Why it does, and why it should…!
Get your prayer right
For the first time in my life, though, I really understood something about worship music, Church music, and Gospel music.
God gave gifts, and those gifts are excellent gifts, not just any old gift, and He expects you to work on that gift.
The second part of that gift God gave us is that we are Musicians… we need to show off that gift, it is in our DNA… it is how God designed us, like the Birds of Paradise!
BUT, the right thing at the right time…
When you are performing, Pray for Excellence
(in other words… be the absolute best you can be, and show off everything you have practiced, give it your best, and give it your all!)
When you are doing ministry with your music, Pray for Authenticity
(Your character carries you, being trustworthy, and true, it is your currency)
And when you are leading worship, Pray that you Get out of the Way!
(You are there to stand next to the congregation, you are there to walk them up the mountain, you are there to help them bring their words and heart to God.)
