I assume you have heard really loud noises. Not firecracker loud, but the loud that you feel in your chest!
Like a V8 racing past you. A monster truck revving up, a huge plane flying low over the stands. The roar of 40,000 supporters on a nail-biting moment, and then winning the critical last needed points?
Or maybe you have been close to an explosion or big guns firing… the raw power associated with the release of all that energy, translated as a deep percussive boom, so loud that you feel it before you hear it?
Have you ever stood next to something really big? Like a mining truck or a tank or a battleship, and just imagined what this thing is capable of? Can you explain it to someone that has never experienced it?
How do you describe an indescribable God? One that creates universes but speaks in whispers? One that travels as a column of fire but walks with His disciples and plays with the children?
David explains the God he serves in Psalm 29. The raw power of God.
“…Be in awe before his majesty.
Be in awe before such power and might!”
(v2)
“…The voice of the Lord echoes through the skies and seas. The Glory-God reigns as he thunders in the clouds. So powerful is his voice, so brilliant and bright—how majestic as he thunders over the great waters!
His tympanic thunder topples the strongest of trees. His symphonic sound splinters the mighty forests.
Now he moves Zion’s mountains by the might of his voice, shaking the snowy peaks with his earsplitting sound! The lightning-fire flashes, striking as he speaks!
God reveals himself when he makes the fault lines quake, shaking deserts, speaking his voice. God’s mighty voice makes the deer to give birth.
His thunderbolt-voice lays the forest bare…”
(Psalm 29:3-9)
So when the loudest noise hits your brain: The overwhelming fear and angst so heavy that the only thing you can hear is your own heartbeat and the blood rushing to your ears…
David says: Remember!!
“… This is The One who gives his strength and might to his people. This is the Lord giving us His kiss of peace…”
(Psalm 29:11)
