Why can we Taste?

I wonder why God decided to give us tastebuds? I wonder why we need food? Or sleep?

I was cooking chicken for dinner… nothing fancy, just a few cuts of chicken, some salt and olive oil in a pan, medium heat and let it sit for a while…

When I dished up, I couldn’t help but grab a slice of bread and scooping up the sauce… absolutely delicious! In one bite the world was ok!

It reminded me of a time in school. I had a terrible day, I was angry, upset, fighting and just generally being utterly depressed… (no, I can’t even remember why)

My mom called me into the kitchen and closed the door. She had just fried up some chicken skins to a crisp and the two of us stood conspiratorially over the stove eating crispy chicken skin. In one short moment, my world was alright.

Food features every now and again in the Bible, and the whole concept of “comfort food” has been accepted as a fact of human existence… but just like Jesus told the lady of the well, “I can give you living water and you will never thirst again…” Dawid claims something even better in psalms.

Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.”
(Psalms 34:8 NIV)

Your Bible might say, “drink deeply” it doesn’t matter. The point was that David was in a mess. People were after him, the king hated him. His day was ruined. The preceding verses:

“When I had nothing, desperate and defeated, I cried out to the Lord and he heard me, bringing his miracle-deliverance when I needed it most. The angel of Yahweh stooped down to listen as I prayed, encircling me, empowering me, and showing me how to escape. He will do this for everyone who fears God.
(Psalms 34:67 TPT)

God is our comfort… God is our deliverer… God is our Father.

So next time it feels like the world is just too much. Dip your bread in the sauce and let your tastebuds remind you: The Lord is good!

He will deliver you if you turn to Him.

“The Lord sees all we do; He watches over his friends day and night. His godly ones receive the answers they seek whenever they cry out to Him.”
(Psalms 34:15 TPT)
