Coach vs Coach

Rugby isn’t everybody’s game, but the South African coach, Rassie Erasmus has become a name many people will recognize. He is a bit rough around the edges, but his players will die for him on the field.

He seems to be able to not just inspire his players, but have built a relationship with them where they know he will fight just as hard for them off the field as they do on the field.

It reminds me of David and his mighty men. Rassie has Etsebeth and Siya but David had Shammah and Banaiah, the warrior that took on giants, and killed a lion, who was the leader of David’s inner defence – the Thirty.

(I cannot help to compare their leadership with what we are witnessing in modern politics… and ask, what happened?)

Each of these guys could be (and was) a leader in their own right, but they decided to become more, to serve something greater. Shammah and Benaiah served God in positions for David. It is a concept to wrap your head around that only seems to work in a Christian Faith.

In the New Testament, Romans 15 gives us a clue when Paul speaks about us as mature Christians. Those mature in the Faith “…don’t live to please themselves…” They have become servants in the Faith.

“Our goal must be to empower others to do what is good and right for them, and to bring them into Spiritual Maturity”
(Romans 15:2 TPT)

Along with verse 7:

“Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.”
(Romans 15:7 NIV)

There is a phenomenal concept here… What if our growth and maturity is not up and down, but sideways? Let me explain:

Like a coach building a team, the teams’ maturity and ability come from serving each other. Imagine if the men around our table has one singular goal for 2025: to build up every other man around that table. To help them grow in God, to strengthen their Faith, to forge a relationship with the Holy Spirit?

What happens if we ask God to help us serve another, instead of asking God to help “me” today?

What if we all wake up every morning, praying for each other’s day? and each other’s family? With how much confidence and Faith do you walk into a boardroom knowing there are 60 warriors standing behind you?

“Then, with a unanimous rush of passion, you will with one voice glorify God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.“
(Romans 15:6 TPT)
