Spending some more time in Psalm 37, I have been pondering verses 4 & 5.
“Find your delight and true pleasure in Yahweh, and He will give you what you desire the most…”
(Psalm 37:4)
God will give you the desires of your heart. If you google anything close to this phrase, Psalm 37 will pop up with various blogs and articles and teaching about God giving you the desires of your heart.
Your Desires…
But as I was pondering this verse this week, I realised something else. This is a promise verse, true… but maybe not what we expect?
When I decided to pursue my wife, she was always on my mind. I was always thinking about how I can do something to make her smile. I wrote pages of poetry and love notes (which I was just too embarrassed to give her) I bought her what I thought were her favourite chocolates… I tried to arrange things so I could walk her home (very surreptitiously, of course) and so on and so on… Most of my attempts to impress her was foolish and childish, but I tried everything, in the hopes that something will get her to like me back.
She could do no wrong… the way she loved little flowers. The way she always saw the good in people. Her gentle way. I was madly in love and pursued her. And got her!
…and I think this is what God is saying:
”Draw near to God and He will draw near to you…”
(James 4:8 NKJ)
Make Me the desire of your heart, and I will give you what you desire: Myself.
