I was walking around our venue this morning, speaking to God and wondering if there is a specific way in which to memorise worship songs. It really feels like I can’t remember the songs or the chord sequences and it’s driving me nuts. I don’t know what is wrong with me. Maybe it is spiritual?
I was in the middle of a thought about the correct way to phrase the question in Google so that I actually get an answer in line with what I am wondering about, (and not just a load of ads) when God interrupted…
He reminded me about golf practice while still in school.
“It’s difficult to hit a ball from the bunker”
uh… yeah
“and you practised it a lot?”
uh… yeah…
“and how many times did you drop a ball in the sand at the driving range next to the green to practice that flop shot?”
uh… erm… maybe 200 times a session. Over about 3 years… at least once a week or so. I had blisters on my hand from practising so much on that one shot. It became one of my favourite shots to play, now that I think about it…
“And how many times have you played ’that song’ you are struggling with?”
Erm… maybe three times or so?
“ok… any questions? (yes… this goes for Bible verses too. No… it is not spiritual. Just do the work)”
(Sidenote: I did Google it. The answer was succinct:
”…For those who have memorised entire songs in the past, you probably already know what it takes: persistence bordering on obsession…”)
