Have you seen an elephant charge? Not the elephants in musth, but a momma elephant protecting a little one. There is such a fierceness in her stride that even the the big bulls will step away quite smartly.
I learnt a little something of this when I was a very young and stupid man in Zimbabwe, there is something in the demeanour that changes, a second or two of warning before wrath is unleashed… and whether you consciously decide to or not, your legs start to move… away…
The only other place I have experienced this exact same feral response was when a customs agent insisted on taking my baby son from his mother (my wife) on the airport In Egypt. Even the guys with guns started taking a step back… When I think back on that day, I imagine a typical Hollywood Western. A small town where trouble is about to start and everybody is rushing out of the main street, locking doors and getting behind water barrels!
David describes the same in Psalm 18 (after God saved him from Saul)
“in my distress I cried out to you, the delivering God, and from your temple-throne you heard my troubled cry, and my sobs went right into your heart.”
(Psalms 18:6 TPT)
David was in distress.
… and God reacted…
“The earth itself shivered and shook. It reeled and rocked before him. As the mountains trembled, they melted away, for his anger was kindled on my behalf!”
(Psalms 18:7 TPT)
Read the next 10 verses or so. God moves in power and glory… and anger… “with a mighty roar” He acts!
When we call upon our Father, He doesn’t sit around.
”… but the Lord held onto me.
His love broke open the way…”
(Psalm 18:18,19)
